  • Gi Pants: Depends on the brand, but usually made from 0oz to 12oz ripstop or cotton twill.

  • Good for Stronger or Stockier Grapplers: Stronger or stockier grapplers often engage in high-intensity grappling or pressure-based passing, which makes them more prone to stretching or tiring. But with standard Gis, they find it easy to do that without incurring the risk of wear and tear from strong stitching in high-stress areas such as elbows, knees, or shoulders.

1.2.3 Downsides Of Standard/Mid-Weight Jiu-Jitsu Gi

 

The main downsides of a standard/mid-weight Gi are given below:

  • Heat Retention: Some standard Gis, such as those with gold weaves, retain heat, which can cause problems for you. For example, you may sweat more and feel hotter, especially in hot climates. To fix this problem, you can switch to other types of weaves, such as pearl weave, which retain less heat.
  • Bulky: Well, it depends on personal preferences. But some grapplers find them bulky and overweight during grappling. This can reduce their performance, especially during fast-paced or high-intensity grappling (in contests or training). While others feel they can perform better in a standard Gis. So it all depends on the grappler’s thoughts.
  • Drying Time: Unlike lightweight Gis, which dry quickly after washing, heavyweight or standard Gis take longer to dry. The time increases with the increase in thickness or weight of the Gi.
  • Break-In Period: Most standard Jiu-Jitsu Gis have their own break-in periods after which the grappler can start feeling comfortable wearing them. Before it, the Gi will feel tough and stiff, which will impact the grappling.
  • Shrinkage Potential: The heavyweight Gois are more prone to shrinkage than the lightweight Gis. But it depends on the brands. For example, Elite Sports Gis do not shrink after washing. So choose the Gi wisely.
  • Grip Utility: Just like the ultra-light Gis, the standard Gis are also easier to grip by the opponent during the grappling. But they are less easy to use and offer more resistance to the opponent than the ultra-light Gis. The gripping chances are reduced to a great extent by the double-weave Gis.
  • Difficult Passing Weigh-In Checks: The standard Jiu-Jitsu Gis are heavier than the ultra-light, which makes it difficult for the grappler to pass the IBJJF weight-in checks before the match. The reason is that it adds further weight. But if you are not competing, or flexible in weight class, or have a weight much less than the maximum weight class, then you can have these BJJ Gis.

1.2.4 When Should You Choose the Standard/Mid-Weight Jiu-Jitsu Gi?

 

Choose the Standard/Mid-Weight Jiu Jitsu Gi if you:

  • Are a white belt or beginner.
  • Want IBJJF-compliant Gi.
  • Are stronger or stockier grapplers.
  • Train 3-4 times weekly or more.
  • Want both toughness and comfort.
  • Want a Gi for all-purpose training or contests.
